Testing a Patient’s Blood Glucose
For Testing on the Palm and Forearm (AST):
Hold the lancing device against the test site (base of palm or
forearm). Avoid a test site that has veins, moles, excessive
hair, or bone. Press the lancing device firmly against the test
site and lance the site. Do not lift up the lancing device.
For forearm test sites, apply and release pressure to the
lancing device for a few seconds while keeping the lancing device in constant
contact with the skin. When a drop of blood is formed, lift the lancing device
straight up without smearing the blood.
IMPORTANT:
•
Dispose of lancets properly in biohazard waste.
•
You may need to wait a little longer to get a large enough drop of blood from the
forearm or palm. Do not squeeze the site excessively.
•
If the sample drop of blood runs or spreads due to contact with hair or a crease in
the palm, do not use that sample. Try puncturing again in a smoother area.
