Wheel Bedding
Bedding the wheel is carried out to remove any high spots from the wheel rims and give the nut a
consistent mating surface. Any new wheel nuts or rims MUST be bedded before use.
To fully bed the wheel nut and rim, the nut is to be fully tightened and loosened 10 - 20 times.
Pneumatic wheel guns must be used for this procedure, and it is recommended that the wheel nut
and rim contact surfaces are lubricated. For details of the wheel nut lubrication specifications, please
refer to: Wheel Nut Grease specification.
Following this, the wheel and nut should be inspected to make sure a clear mating face with a good
contact area has been achieved on the nut, and that there is a clear witness mark around the full
circumference of the wheel rim/nut contact surface.
Neglecting to bed the wheel rim or nut can lead to the wheel coming loose and causing damage to the
mating faces on the rim, disc bell and drive pegs.
For a guide as to what is considered as a correctly bedded rim and nut, see Figure 96 below.

NOTE: The correct hub unit must be mounted onto the correct side of the car. The hub units
have been etched to show which side of the car they are to be fitted to, not which hand thread
they are. The wheel nuts are also handed to correspond with the hub units, make sure that the
wheel nuts are correctly identified by the technicians before fitment.
NOTE: McLaren Customer Racing advises that only the recommended lubricant is applied to the
wheel pegs, for details of the wheel nut lubrication specifications, please refer to: Wheel Nut
Grease specification. Always exercise caution to make sure no contact is made between the
lubricant and the brake disc surface.
