Martin maxium & maxium Beamer Operating Instructions
V 2.0
56
8 Start-Up
For safety reasons, only persons who are thoroughly familiar with the system may use the maxium
HF surgical unit. The Operating Instructions must be strictly observed both during user instruction
and when working with the unit.
Initial user instruction:
The maxium may only be put into operation after a functional test has been performed at the place
of use either by Gebrüder Martin or by a person authorized by Gebrüder Martin to carry out such
work. In addition, a person appointed by the user/owner of the unit must have been familiarized
with the maxium, including detailed instructions on its proper handling, use and operation and on
permitted connections to other medical products, objects and accessories. It is the responsibility of
this appointed and trained person to conduct subsequent user training sessions regularly at the
owner‘s premises.
We recommend documenting such user instruction in a medical equipment log. Log book copies
are also available from Martin on request.
8.1 Functional
Tests
Prior to working with the unit, be sure to perform the following checks and functional tests.
8.1.1 Monopolar
Functional
Test
Before using the unit, all of its functions must be checked. Please perform the following monopolar
checks and tests:
1. Verify that the accessories used (handle, single-surfaced or split neutral electrode, etc.) have
no visible defects.
2. Connect the accessories to the Martin maxium.
3. Switch on the unit.
4. The unit now performs an automatic self-test. Watch for potential error messages. Depending
on the neutral electrode setting (see section 6, “Operating the Unit”), either a green and single-
surfaced NE symbol must be displayed if you are using a single-surfaced NE, or a double-
surfaced NE symbol remaining red if you are using a split NE. Attach the neutral electrode to
the patient. In the case of a split NE, the neutral electrode indicator will switch from red to
green only after the NE has been correctly attached to the patient’s skin.
5. Now, briefly activate the HF current with the handle or footswitch. If the neutral electrode has
been correctly connected (NE symbol = green on display), the corresponding activation signal
must be heard for each of the monopolar HF currents (for cutting as well as coagulation). At the
same time, the appropriate activation indicator – (2), (5), (8) or (11) – located next to the HF
outputs (1), (4), (7) or (10) must light up in accordance with the type of current selected – yel-
low for cutting, blue for coagulation.
