CHAPTER 11:  Using the RF Wireless Extender

A.

OVERVIEW

The Harmony 890 remote control offers the ability to control your A/V devices (and other
entertainment system devices,  such  as  room  lighting)  with  either  infrared  (IR)  or  radio  frequency

(RF) signals.  Most devices receive only IR signals, requiring your remote to be in a “line-of-sight”
(

A

) to control the device.  With the supplied Wireless RF Extender, you can control these devices

when they are behind closed doors in an A/V cabinet (

B

), behind tables or other obstructions from

your viewing or listening area, or even from another room (

C

).

Better yet, with all devices controlled using RF signals, you can perform macros – such as choosing

an activity or turning your entertainment system off – with a single click. You’ll know that the proper
signals will be reliably sent in succession to the controlled devices, without having to keep the
remote pointed at your components until all commands are sent.

The default setting for the 890 remote is to control all your devices by IR.  If you set the Wireless

Extender to control a particular device, the 890 sends RF signals to the Wireless Extender, which
then converts the signals to IR and sends them to the device.

The RF Extender may control devices

in three ways:

By sending a wide-beam IR signal in a line of sight to the controlled devices-

 The Wireless

Extender has a built-in “IR Blaster”, which can control any or all of your programmed devices

within a line-of-sight to the IR sensors on the front of the controlled devices, but it may be
mounted on a wall or inside a cabinet.

By using one or more of the four supplied IR emitters-

The four, dual-headed IR emitters can

control up to eight devices the Wireless Extender cannot reach by line-of-sight (each emitter
can control one or two devices).

By using a combination of the IR Blaster and the IR emitters-

 The choice is yours, allowing

you nearly unlimited flexibility in locating controlled devices.

Before you can use the Wireless Extender to control your devices, you’ll need to configure your
remote for the devices to be controlled by the 890 and by the Wireless Extender, then update the

configuration on both devices.  This is most easily done if you read this entire chapter carefully and
plan your installation completely before physical installation of the Wireless Extender.
