Suggested Activities for Building Money Skills
The following activities are divided into two sections: the first is intended for teaching
money skills to early learners, while the second progresses to using the ATM as a savings
bank. We recommend starting with the
play money
provided, until the child shows an
understanding of the skills introduced in the first section. When the child is ready, move on
to the second section, using
real money
to start saving with the ATM.
For younger savers (developing money math skills using
play money
):
• Show and identify each coin. Spread out a variety of coins. Call out a coin name
(“penny!”) and have your child find it.
• Offer the child one nickel and one dime. Ask him or her to choose the coin of greater
value. Younger children often choose the nickel because they think a larger coin is
worth more money. To reinforce each coin’s true value, ask, “Which number is larger,
5
or
10
?”
