DC POWER
BATTERIES
Two batteries located in the tailcone (Figure
2A-1) provide the backup source of DC power.
Each battery has a removable cover and an
airtight case which is vented overboard. The
batteries are of sufficient capacity to supply
normal ground electrical requirements and
may be used for engine starting when exter-
nal power is not available. Either lead-acid or
nickel-cadmium (nicad) batteries are certi-
fied for use in 20 series Learjets. They are
rated at 24 VDC and vary in amperage de-
pending on size.
Lead-acid batteries are enclosed in a plastic
case. Nickel-cadmium (nicad) batteries are
enclosed in a stainless steel case. Charging
nicad batteries with a GPU is not recom-
mended, but if absolutely necessary, the fol-
lowing Maintenance Manual restrictions
should be observed:
• Battery voltage must not be less than
20.5 volts (no load).
• Initial battery temperature must not ex-
ceed 100ºF (37.8ºC).
• The GPU must be precisely regulated to
28 ±0.5 volts/1,000 amperes maximum.
• Voltage and battery temperature must
be continuously monitored.
• M a x i m u m t e m p e r a t u r e r i s e i s 1 5 º F
(9.4ºC) from the starting temperature.
