Serial Port Configuration
4 - 9
For example, to make the MSS log out the port after two minutes of inactivity, use the following
commands:

Enabling Timed Inactivity Logout
4.4.7 Preferred Port Service
A default service for a port can be defined using the Change Preferred command. The MSS
attempts to use the preferred service for connections when no service name is specified in a Telnet
(TCP), Rlogin, SPX, or LAT command.

Defining a Preferred Service
4.4.8 Dedicated Port Service
A dedicated service can also be defined for the port using the Change Dedicated command. A
dedicated port automatically connects users to the specified host; they cannot return to local
mode. When the connection is closed, the users are automatically logged out of the MSS.

Defining a Dedicated Service
Environment strings can be added to the command to change connection characteristics. See the
Change Dedicated
command on page 6-6 for more information.
NOTE:
Because dedicated connections leave no easy way to log into the server, configuring
the MSS’s single serial port for dedicated service is not recommended unless incoming
logins are enabled. Otherwise, only Telnet console port connections are possible.
4.4.9 Autostart
Normally, the serial port will wait for a carriage return before starting a connection. When the
Autostart option is enabled, the connection will be established as soon as the unit boots (or if
modem control is enabled, as soon as the DSR signal is asserted). To control this feature, enter the
Change Autostart
command.
Figure 4-27:
Enabling Autostart
A port set for Autostart will not be idle, and therefore will not be available for network
connections. If network connections are desired, Autostart should remain disabled (the default).
