4.3 Installation
Necessary tools: Spirit level, measuring tape and rubber mallet.
NB: The base must be level. Max. 1 mm/m tolerance. This is
extremely important to ensure that the rest of the installation
is correct.
All stones must be level. This has to be checked for each new
layer of stones.
Important!
Bear in mind that the soap stones may be damaged if they are
handled roughly. Do not knock the mounting brackets too hard.
Installation should be carried out by a qualified person.
The soap stones are heavy and should be handled with care
during unpacking. Place unpacked stones on a soft base with
the numbers visible.
Position the base plate in place.
1.
Fit the height adjustment stones in the bolts on the base
2.
plate, see
fig. 4.
Remove the heat shields by unscrewing the two screws,
3.
M8x20 mm, on either side
(fig. 6-1A)
of the burn chamber.
Lay the product carefully down on its back
4.
(fig. 5)
. You can put the
cardboard packaging on the floor to protect it from scratches, etc.
Adjust the length of the 3 legs by loosening the bolt
5.
(see
fig. 7).
Pull the leg down to position «
36»
and retighten the
bolt well.
Adjust legs in the same way as described above. Screw
6.
the foot screw on the two front legs as illustrated in
fig. 8A
. Screw the foot screw on the rear leg about
10-15
mm
through the foot on the burn chamber (see fig. 8C).
Attach the heat shield
7.
(fig. 9-1A
) to the underside of the burn
chamber using the accompanying screws and sleeves. See
Fig.
9-2
for the installed heat shield.
Stand the product carefully up.
8.
Replace the heat shield
9.
(fig. 6-2)
.
Position the burn chamber on the height adjustment stones
10.
(fig. 10)
. Check whether the burn chamber is level.
Place the rear plate at
11.
the back
of the base plate.
Fit the first layer with soap stone (start from one of the
12.
side edges). See
Figs. 11A
for the positions of the mounting
brackets.
When using an
13.
ash collection system
(
(cat. no. 341280)
, this
has to be fitted now.
When using an
14.
external air connection
(cat. no. 341279)
, this
has to be fitted now.
Fit the side stones by lifting up the stone, pushing it in and
15.
then pressing it in place on the brackets. See
Figs. 11B, C and
D).
The second layer is fitted from one of the side edges, so
place the smallest steel bracket in position. Then fit the 3
front stones.
Adjust the foot screws slightly
16.
(Fig. 12)
from the side to make
the burn chamber level.
NB: This has to be adjusted in stages
to prevent the burn chamber from falling over on its side.
.
The gap below the burn chamber must be
5 mm
parallel to
the second layer on the top. See
Figs. 13A)
. The front must be
flush with the front of the layer.
Fit the last side stone on the second layer.
17.
Adjust the position of the burn chamber in relation to the
18.
surround, then level it both vertically and diagonally.
.
Fit the second rear plate.
19.
Layers 3 and 4 are the same and have steel brackets at the
20.
bottom
of the third layer and the
top
of the fourth layer
(fig.
15
) Fit the side stones before the narrow side stones
(fig. 14)
are fitted.
Fit the supporting brackets on the tops of either side of the heat
21.
shield for the burn chamber using the screws and nuts supplied
as shown in
Figs. 18, 19 and 20
. Tighten the screws loosely.
Push the brackets forwards towards the insides of the narrow
22.
front stones. See
Fig. 20
. Check that the front of the burn
chamber is flush with the fronts of the front stones. Then
tighten the screws thoroughly
.
Fit the smoke bell as follows:
Install the accompanying gasket on the underside of the edge
23.
of the smoke bell in the gasket channel
(Fig. 16-2)
.
Install the smoke bell from outside by fixing it in place using
24.
the four accompanying M8x20 mm screws
(Fig. 16-1)
.
Rotate the smoke bell to the desired position. Tighten the screws.
25.
Then install the flue pipe in the product’s smoke bell. Use
26.
gasket rope between the smoke bell and the flue pipe.
Fit the flue pipe in accordance with the instructions. The
27.
surround may have a rear outlet or a top outlet.
If a rear outlet is present:
28.
Remove the knockout, see
Fig. 17C
.
Position the third rear plate.
29.
Fit the fifth and sixth layers. (Start from one of the side
30.
stones.)
Fit the seventh layer (the top stones), see
31.
fig. 17A
for
positioning the top grate in the groove in the top stones.
See
32.
pt. 34
when using a steel chimney.
If a top outlet is present:
33.
Remove the knockout in the top
grate for opening to the flue pipe, see
Fig. 17B.
If a steel chimney is used:
34.
If a top-mounted steel chimney is
used, an uninsulated pipe is fitted from the burn chamber to
approximately 1 cm through the top grate. Then fit the steel
chimney in accordance with the operating instructions.
Replace the exhaust deflector
(fig. 3A)
and baffle
(fig. 3B)
. Place
the rear burn plate
(fig. 2F)
between the ribs of the rear plate.
The side burn plates
(fig. 2E)
are inserted at an angle at the front
edge and then swivelled into the back edge. An air duct
(Fig. 2D)
and log retainer
(fig. 2C)
are positioned last.

See the General user and maintenance manual for Jøtul I
400
for
the use and maintenance of the product.
5.1 Maintenance

may be polished out using a fine sandpaper. If deeper scratches are
present, a paste made of powdered soap stone and water glass can
be made up which you can use to fill the stone.
5.2 Optional extras
Floor plate in front of the product.
