TERMINOLOGY
International regulations have standardised the terminology related to lasers, their components,
accessories, performances, etc. See below for a list of the principal definitions and the applicable
regulations.
Definitions as set out in the European standard EN 12626 (ISO 11553) Safety of machinery; Laser
processing machines.
1. MACHINE –
a set of connected parts or components, at least one of which in motion, with all the
necessary actuators, controls and power circuits connected together for a specific application, in
particular for the processing, treatment, handling or packing of material.
2. LASER SYSTEM –
Machinery that includes a laser source having sufficient energy to interact with
the workpiece, and which is equipped with all the functional and safety aspects of a fully operational
machine.
3. MANUFACTURER –
Individual or organisation that assembles the laser system.
4. COMPLEX COMPONENT –
An element used in the manufacture of a device, but which cannot be
considered in itself a device, not having a function intrinsic to the end purpose.
5. INSTALLED SYSTEM –
A set consisting of several devices and/or systems combined in such a way as
to achieve a specific objective but not intended to be placed on the market as a single commercial unit.
6. ELECTROMAGNETIC COMPATIBILITY –
the ability of a device, equipment or system to function
satisfactorily in its electromagnetic environment without introducing intolerable electromagnetic
disturbances to other equipment in that environment, in compliance with both the emission (disturbance
produced by the device) and immunity (insensitivity to disturbances produced by the surrounding
environment) requirements.
7. SECOND ENVIRONMENT –
Environment that includes all industrial utilities other than those connected
directly to a low voltage power supply network that supplies buildings used for domestic purposes.
8. IN SITU –
Environment in which the device is installed for normal use by the end user and in which the
device must be tested.
9. RESTRICTED DISTRIBUTION –
Marketing mode in which the manufacturer limits the supply of
equipment to suppliers, customers, or users who, separately or jointly, satisfy the applicable technical
EMC requirements for the installation of electrical and electronic equipment and who, through
the exchange of technical specifications, carry out "in situ" measurements of the actual boundary
conditions.
