7.2 Coolant Plumbing Installation
The plumbing installation should consider the following:

The Hurricane
®
Chinook has an overflow fitting located on the
top of the unit. Ensure a four (4) quart minimum overflow bottle
is attached to the overflow fitting. The connection point on the
overflow bottle is at the bottom.

The supply and return coolant plumbing connections are on the
top of the Hurricane
®
Chinook Heating System. Both coolant
supply and return fittings are ¾” hose-barb connections. The
supply (coolant output) from the Hurricane
®
Chinook is labeled
"Heating Loop Supply". The return (coolant input) is labeled
"Heating Loop Return". Ensure the direction of flow is correct.
See Figure 7-1: for the location of the fittings.

Hose and/or tubing used to connect to the Hurricane
®
Chinook
supply and return connections must be heavy duty heater hose,
minimum 3/4” I.D, or 5/8” PEX. Refer to Figure 7-3 for
connecting PEX tubing to the 3/4" hose-barb connections
All fittings (except the Heat Loop return fitting) on the Hurricane
®
Chinook require two wrenches when tightening. One wrench must
be placed on the bulkhead fitting and held in place to prevent this
fitting from being overstressed. The other wrench can be used to
tighten the matching half of the fitting onto it. Failure to follow this
procedure will damage the Hurricane
®
Chinook and the fittings.
Do not operate the Hurricane
®
Chinook Heating System until a
proper water/anti-freeze heat transfer solution has been added to
the Hurricane
®
Chinook and the heating system. All trapped air
must be bled from the entire system. An inadequate mixture of heat
transfer fluid could cause system circulation problems, potential
heating system damage and/or personal injury. Use only a non-
toxic, propylene glycol based coolant with additives generally
recognized as safe “GRAS” by the FDA. Refer to the anti-freeze
manufacturers recommendations for instructions and information
regarding using the product in a boiler/hydronic heating system
application.
