Figure 1-3
shows how FastSwitch devices are used in a larger network. A network operator at the
data center can connect equipment using FastSwitch at a central office which has multiple remote
sites. Similarly, multiple central offices can also deploy the FastSwitch. Such large-network
deployment of the FastSwitch provides LAN connectivity from the data center all the way out to
multiple remote sites.

As shown in
Figure 1-3
, FastSwitch ports may be used to cascade switches together; likewise, FastRoute
ports can be used to cascade routers together.

For clarity, one FastSwitch card and two FastRoute cards are shown in
Figure 1-3
’s Central Office shelf. In
high density applications, more FastSwitch and FastRoute cards can be installed in a shelf to connect with
remote sites through additional T1 lines.
