Chapter 1. Overview
The topics in this chapter describe the configurations available for the 3958 AP1
server and the common components of the server.
The IBM 3958 AP1 appliance is available in four configurations:
v
Two-drawer stand-alone appliance
v
Four-drawer stand-alone appliance
v
Eight-drawer stand-alone appliance
v
Eight-drawer clustered appliance
All configurations use the following common components:
v
IBM System x3850 X5 (Type 7145) servers
v
IBM System x3850 X5, Type 7145 (Feature Code 3708: 4.8 TB Fibre Channel Disk
Controller) (Type 1814-94H)
v
IBM System Storage DS4000 EXP 810 (Type 1812 81H) disk expansion modules
(Feature Code 3707: 4.8 TB Fibre Channel Disk Expansion Unit)
v
IBM TS3000 System Console (TSSC), TSSC Ethernet switch, KVM
(keyboard/video/mouse) kit, and KVM switch. If the customer prefers to use an
existing TSSC, the TSSC and its related components are excluded from the
TS7650 purchase.
Important:
The TSSC
must
be present in an IBM-supported TS7650 Appliance.
The customer should either have ordered one with the appliance or have one
already available for use at the installation site. While it is possible to operate a
TS7650 Appliance without a connected TSSC, note that IBM
does not support
this configuration. If the customer neither ordered a TSSC with the appliance
nor has one already available for use at the installation site,
stop
the installation
and advise the customer to work with IBM sales to secure a TSSC for use with
the appliance.
Note:
FC 5513 and FC 5514 are available to connect one or more servers to an
existing KVM switch in an adjacent frame.
All servers are factory-preloaded with the following software:
v
Red Hat Enterprise Linux Advanced Platform, version 5.6 (version x86_64 or
EM64T) operating system
v
IBM System Storage ProtecTIER Appliance Edition version 3.1.8, including RAS
functionality
The number of servers, disk controllers, and disk expansion modules included
vary, depending upon the Appliance configuration purchased.
See Chapter 2, “Appliance configurations,” on page 11 for additional system
specifications and details.
