8.2 TOWING AND MOVING ON TO THE PUBLIC HIGHWAY
a)
Ensure that the towing vehicle is of suitable capacity to tow the Trailed Bin Cleaning
Unit (the weight of which is 900kg, including 200 litres of water, which should not be
exceeded) and that the driver is competent in towing.
b)
Confirm that the Trailed Bin Cleaning Unit is safe and in good order:
•
Check tyres for condition (tread depth, cuts or bulges) and correct inflation
pressure.
•
Check wheel nuts for tightness
•
Check the tow coupling for security and remove key from coupling lock
•
Check condition of the safety breakaway cable
•
Check that all other items on the Trailed Bin Cleaning Unit are secure
c)
With the handbrake applied, use the jockey wheel height adjusting crank to set the
height of the ball hitch to just above that of the vehicle tow ball.
Couple the Trailed Bin Cleaning Unit to the vehicle making sure that all persons are
clear when reversing. Lift the ball hitch locking lever and lower the ball hitch/drawbar
using the height adjusting crank so that the hitch locking lever clicks back down into
its locked position over the ball, indicating it is securely attached to the tow vehicle.
Securely attach the breakaway cable to a solid anchor point on the vehicle.
d)
The handbrake should be released and jockey wheel fully raised and securely locked
in position by tightening its locking handle.
e)
Connect lighting plug, verify all trailer lights for correct operation and that reflectors
are clean.
f)
Ensure that all ancillary equipment is securely attached and stowed on the
vehicle.
g)
Attach a number plate to suit the towing vehicle.
