J Class Technical Reference
I/O Assembly
The I/O board connects directly to the system back plane and contains all of the system’s external I/O
connections (See Figure 1–4 in HP9000 J Class Owner’s Guide). This board is removed from the back of
the system. The following is a detailed specification of this board:

Power Supply
This section contains the power supply PCB and two 80 mm fans. It directly connects to the system back
plane via blind mate connectors and delivers 484 watts of power to the rest of the system. This subsystem
can be removed from the front of the chassis without disconnecting any cables except the AC Line Cord
from the back of the system chassis.

Power System Specification
The J Class Power Supply is 484 watts at 75% efficiency which delivers all the proper voltages to the
system. It contains two 80 mm fans designed to deliver the proper airflow to all sections in the system.
Power is distributed through “blind mate” interconnects to the system backplane, minimizing the number
of internal power cables and easing manufacturing and field servicing of the system. The power system
budget is shown in Chapter 7 of this document. There are two voltage regulators on the system board.
One co5v to +2v and the second converts –12v to –3.2v. These two regulators provide power to
the clock circuits. There is also a voltage regulator on the EISA backplane which converts –12v to –5v for
EISA power. The system is turned On/Off via the front panel switch.
LCD Display Board
The control panel module is a 16–character x 2–line display. The display is connected to the System board
by a single 14–pin connector located directly in back of the Hitachi Module Board. Note that the J Class
implementation requires a special viewing angle part. The “industry standard” part is a 6:00 view as
implemented in a calculator. That optimizes a viewing angle looking from the bottom. The J Class part
optimizes a 12:00 viewing angle from the top.
