In
systems
equipp ed
only
with
text
terminals,
HP-UX
usually
comm
unicates
with
the
user
through
a
shell .
A
shell
is
a
program
that
captures
text
t
yp ed
on
the
terminal's
k
eyb oard,
in
terprets
the
text
in
to
commands
and
data,
transmits
the
commands
to
the
op erating
system,
and
prin
ts
the
results
of
the
commands'
execution
(and
an
y
resulting
messages)
on
the
terminal's
screen.
A
shell
is
sometimes
also
called
a
command
in
terpreter
or
command
pro cessor.
When
y
ou
in
teract
with
y
our
computer
using
the
en
tire
screen
as
a
terminal
(that
is,
if
y
ou
do
not
use
OSF/Motif
or
another
windo
w
en
vironmen
t),
y
ou
will
use
the
shell
in
m
uc
h
the
same
w
a
y
y
ou
w
ould
if
y
ou
w
ere
w
orking
on
a
text
terminal.
If
y
ou
set
up
y
our
computer
to
run
HP
VUE
or
the
OSF/Motif
windo
w
en
vironmen
t
up on
whic
h
it
is
based,
eac
h
terminal
windo
w
that
y
ou
op en
with
hpterm
or
xterm
runs
a
shell
program.
