DISASSEMBLY
1. General
This section describes how to disassemble the XK516D1 HF Transceiver down to the module lev-
el. Disassemble the Transceiver only to the extent necessary for repair or replacement of mod-
ules. Disassembly instructions are in the general or recommended sequence necessary to pro-
vide access to the next lower assembly or item.
NOTE: Fig. and Item numbers used in the following instructions refer to the Fig. and item numbers
listed in the ILLUSTRATED PARTS LIST (IPL) section.
NOTE: Refer to TESTING AND TROUBLESHOOTING section to establish condition of unit or
most probable cause of its malfunction.
CAUTION: TO PREVENT DAMAGE TO UNIT, TURN OFF EXTERNAL POWER TO UNIT AND REMOVE IT
FROM INSTALLATION RACK BEFORE DISASSEMBLING IT.
CAUTION: ELECTROSTATIC DISCHARGE SENSITIVE (ESDS) DEVICES ARE SUBJECT TO DAMAGE
BY EXCESSIVE LEVELS OF VOLTAGE. REFER TO DOD-HDBK-263 FOR PROPER HAN-
DLING PROCEDURES.
2. Disassembly Techniques
A. Label assemblies, subassemblies, parts, and electrical leads to be removed. Note position-
ing and polarity before removal.
B. Screws that were installed with adhesive can be loosened by applying heat from soldering
iron to screw head.
3. XK516D1 Transceiver (IPL Fig. 1)
A. Place the Transceiver bottom side up, with the handle facing the operator.
B. Remove bottom cover (2) by removing screws (3) and (4).
C. Remove bottom cover (8) by removing screws (9) and (11).
D. Remove High Frequency Modem (HFM), A10 (62) (if installed) by carefully pulling card out
of its plug-in connector (X23) on Motherboard, A6 (28).
E. Remove Controller D, A8 (5) by carefully pulling card out of it’s plug-in connectors, X21 and
X22, on Motherboard.

Remove Interface D, A9 (7) by carefully pulling card out of it’s plug-in connector, X20, on
Motherboard.
G. Remove LED Board, A5 (43) by removing screws (44) from front panel (40). Disconnect ca-
ble (45) between LED Board connector, X1, and Motherboard connector, X14.
H. Remove Airborne Datalink Processor (ADP), A2 (61/61A) (if installed) by carefully pulling
card out of it’s plug-in connectors, X80 and X81, on Motherboard.

Remove Receiver/Exciter, A1 (26) by loosening the insertion interlocks and carefully pulling
A1 out of it’s plug-in connector, X10, on Motherboard. Disconnect connector, X210, from A1
(cable W1 routed through Motherboard to Power Amplifier, A3).

Remove chassis cover (35) by removing screws (33) and (41).
K. Remove Power Amplifier, A3 (15) per these steps:
(1) Disconnect connectors, X171, X173, and X175, from Power Supply, A4 (12).
