TAKING CARE OF UNEXPECTED PROBLEMS
ENGINE WILL NOT
START
Possible Cause
Correction
1. Check control
positions.
Fuel valve OFF.
Move lever to ON
position.
Choke OPEN.
Move lever to
CLOSED position
unless the engine is
warm.
Engine switch OFF.
Turn engine switch
to ON position. The
engine switch is
mounted on the
equipment powered
by this engine. Refer
to the instructions
provided with that
equipment for
information about
your specific engine
switch operation.
2. Check engine oil
level.
Engine oil level low. Fill with the
recommended oil to
the proper level
(p. 8).
3. Check fuel.
Out of fuel.
Refuel (p. 7).
Bad fuel; engine
stored without
treating or draining
gasoline, or refueled
with bad gasoline.
Drain fuel tank and
carburetor (p. 12).
Refuel with fresh
gasoline (p. 7).
4. Remove and
inspect spark
plug.
Spark plug faulty,
fouled, or
improperly gapped.
Gap or replace spark
plug (p. 10).
Spark plug wet with
fuel (flooded
engine).
Dry and reinstall
spark plug. Start
engine with throttle
lever in MAX.

mounted on the
equipment powered
by this engine. Refer
to the instructions
provided with that
equipment for
information about
your specific throttle
control.
5. Take engine to
your servicing
dealer, or refer to
shop manual.
Fuel filter restricted,
carburetor
malfunction,
ignition
malfunction, valves
stuck, Fuel pump
malfunction (high
inclination models),
etc.
Replace or repair
faulty components
as necessary.
ENGINE LACKS
POWER

1. Check air filter.
Filter element(s)
restricted.
Clean or replace
filter element(s)

2. Check fuel.
Bad fuel; engine
