7.1 REPLACING MOWER BELT
NOTE: The following procedure applies to both the
long mower belt and the short mower belt.
1. Stop the engine. Remove the ignition key.
2. Remove the footboard from the support frame.
3. Loosen and remove the two nuts, the flat washer
and the spring from the idler rod and remove the
old belt.
4. Arrange the new mower belt on the spindle
sheaves and the idler pulley. Put the belt on the
mower clutch sheave (long mower belt only). Put
the idler rod back through the spring support. Put
the spring, flat washer and two nuts back on the
idler rod. See Figure 10.
5. Set mower cut height to 3.5 inches and adjust belt.
To tighten the mower belt, turn the adjusting nut on
the idler rod until the gap between the coils of the
spring is .010" to .015" (.25 mm to .38 mm). When
the belt is tight, hold the adjusting nut and lock the
jam nut against it.
6. Put the foot board back on the support frame.
7.2 MOWER BLADE
Regularly check mower blades for wear and that lock
washer is fully compressed by cap screw(s) (requires
25-30 ft-lbs (33.8-40.6 Nm) of torque on cap screw).
When blade needs sharpening, block blade to prevent
rotation and remove cap screw(s), lock washer(s) and
blade from shaft.
Sharpen both edges of blade at original angle (25
o
),
removing equal amounts of material from each end to
maintain proper blade balance. New blades are
balanced to within 1.3 in-lbs (0.14 Nm) at factory. DO
NOT grind around corner at tip of blade. If cutting edge
of blade cannot be sharpened in a straight line to within
1/8 of an inch of its end, replace blade. Use Gravely
replacement blade only.
