GPS Function
Geoscanners AB file format, the GSF format is unique in a way that all the necessary information is stored within
one file. There is no need to have several files to accurately reconstruct the acquired survey. The GPS coordinates
are also embedded in the GSF file and the latitude, longitude and altitude are stored for each individual collected
trace.
Before attempting to use this function make sure that you have a GPS attached to your control unit PC. Check
with the settings in the “General Settings” dialogue window that the port and baud rate are correct and that NMEA
sentences are streaming to the unit. For this purpose there is a button in the “General Settings” dialogue window
labeled “Test GPS”.
In order to get the best from your GPS receiver let it run for a while so a fix position has been established and you
have the most accurate data it can provide. If you have a GPS that support A-GPS then check that the almanac
is up to date and that the fix is correct. If your GPS supports high update rate you might want to use it for fast
acquisition surveys.
Press the GPS button link in the main toolbar or press Alt+G on your keyboard. Immediately GAS™ will try
to connect to your GPS receiver, if nothing is found an error message saying “Port not enable” will pop up. If
everything is OK then in the GAS™ status bar will appear a green label informing you that the GPS receiver is
connected and the port it is connected.
All the time the NMEA sentences are coming from the GPS receiver you’ll have a current update position in the
main toolbar. This can be extremely useful to evaluate the correctness of the GPS and the fact that the coordinates
are coming in a proper way.
