12.7 MONTHLY MAINTENANCE for low-load generators
1. carry out the operations described under routine maintenance
2. check the generating set operations and load
3. start the generating set and let it tick over at 50% load for 1 or 2 hours
12.8 MAINTENANCE EVERY 6 MONTHS or 250 HOURS
Repeat the daily procedures already described and carry out the following:
1. check the charge of the starting batteries
2. check the electrical connections, that the fuses are intact and the terminals are tight, the contacts for wear and
thoroughly clean inside the board. For automatic control boards, the relays and the contactors must be checked for wear
and for cleanliness, greasing them lightly with Vaseline; check that all the terminals are perfectly tight. Use compressed
air to clean the control board.
3. check the exhaust connections.
4. carry out other maintenance operations on the engine if they are specified in the engine handbook.
5. check the safety device of the electric control board checking system, simulating possible anomalies.
6. start the generator set. For manually-operated control boards, turn the key switch clockwise to the position START
while simultaneously pressing the push button START. For automatic control boards, put the generator operation
selector switch to the TEST position to start the generating set without disturbing the delivery of power in progress.
WHENEVER THERE IS A MAINS POWER FAILURE DURING TESTS, THE MAINS CONTACTOR
AUTOMATICALLY OPENS AND THE GENERATOR CONTACTOR CLOSES. UPON THE RETURN OF MAINS POWER,
THE CONTACTORS CHANGE AGAIN: IN THE “AUTOMATIC” POSITION THE ENGINE STOPS AND THE GENERATOR
IS SET TO START AUTOMATICALLY IF THERE IS A MAINS POWER FAILURE.
12.9 STORAGE DURING A LONG PERIOD OF INACTIVITY
During long stops and storage, the generating sets must be placed if possible in a closed, dry room and covered with a
sheet. The instructions for storing the diesel engine, given in the engine handbook, must specifically be observed.
Regarding the alternator, in the event of prolonged periods of inactivity, it is advisable to test the insulation to earth of the
stator windings before starting up; before carrying out this test, however, the voltage regulator must be disconnected
following the instructions given in the alternator handbook under “Insulation tests”. If the test, carried out with a megger or
similar instrument, shows that the insulation resistance to earth is less than 0.5 M
Ω
, the alternator must be dried (for
example in an oven at 50-60°C for about 24 hours), then repeat the test. It is also advisable to measure the overall insulation
resistance of the electric control board to earth, which should be 1 M
Ω
.
12.10 TROUBLESHOOTING
The various situations of possible malfunctioning of the generating set are given below and the operations to be carried out
to restore the machine to proper working order.
