The protective measure for electrical separation may then be applied, Fig. 4, since the situation shown in Fig. 5 is to
be excluded. The neutral, insulated from the earth, also makes any possible direct contact less dangerous,
considering the limited extension of the circuit. To allow practical execution of the above,

generating sets
come supplied with the neutral insulated and accessible; furthermore, all the metal earths are electrically connected
to an appropriately marked single external terminal.
11. Check the cyclic sense of the phases.
In automatic-operation generating sets or spare manually-operated ones with external production lines, check that
the cyclic sense of the generator phases correspond to the cyclic direction of the phases of the external producer.
This is to avoid reversal of rotation of the electric motors and other troubles.
9.1 RUNNING IN
The following procedures must be followed to start the electric control boards for the first time or after a long period of
being idle due to maintenance:
1. complete commissioning as described in chapter 8.0.
2. connect the battery to the engine, first the positive, then the negative terminal.
GRADUAL RUNNING IN OF A NEW ENGINE IS UNNECESSARY. PROLONGED OPERATION WITH
LIGHT LOADS DURING THE FIRST PERIOD OF OPERATION OF THE ENGINE IS NOT RECOMMENDED,
OTHERWISE EXCESSIVE CONSUMPTION OF OIL IS INEVITABLE AND IS MANIFESTED BY THE GRADE OF
SMOKE COMING OUT OF THE EXHAUST AND DROPS OF OIL EXPELLED FROM THE ENGINE EXHAUST.
The problem becomes more than obvious in air-cooled engines, because cooling of the cylinders is always constant both
loadless and under full load; loadless the engine therefore remains particularly cold. Instead in water-cooled engines,
the cooling fluid is varied by the thermostatic valve, thus greatly reducing wide temperature ranges between loadless
and loaded, helping the steady thermal state of the engine to be obtained even with low loads. From what has been said,
it is obvious that the generating set must always work with over 60% load, especially in the running-in period;
otherwise, apart from the trouble described above, the diesel engine is permanently compromised and will be less
powerful, more smoky and less efficient that the same engine used correctly. If incidental problems do not allow the
indicated load percentages to be reached, using extreme caution the air intakes or the engine radiator may be shuttered;
such shields, however, must not jeopardise correct cooling of the engine and must be removed if the generating set is to
operate with variable loads up to full load.
THESE SHUTTERING OPERATIONS MUST BE CARRIED OUT BY QUALIFIED, TRAINED PERSONNEL
EQUIPPED WITH SUITABLE WORKING MEANS AND TOOLS.
