PERSONNEL. DURING MAINTENANCE, DO NOT SMOKE OR TAKE NAKED FLAMES NEAR THE
ACCUMULATORS IN ORDER TO AVOID EXPLOSIONS.
Geko
generating sets come complete with lead batteries for starting; these batteries are normally the “dry charging”
type and when commissioning, all the elements should therefore be filled (up to a level exceeding that of the plates by
5-10 mm) with a solution of sulphuric acid for lead batteries.
In an emergency the battery may be used as soon as the filling operation is complete. It is advisable, however, before
using for the first time to let it charge for a few hours with a current intensity equal to 1/30 of the rated capacity of the
actual battery.
7. Check the electric control board and the generating set, cleaning them if necessary of dirt and dust which could create
hazardous electric
contacts or problems of overheating.
8.
Check that the suction air filter is not clogged, checking that the mechanical indicator on the actual filter does not
show the “red” sign (see engine handbook); if necessary replace.
9.
Free the area around the generating set to avoid difficulty in carrying out maintenance operations or causing injury
to persons. Make sure that the cooling air is clean.
10.
Visually check the generating set for leaks in the cooling system, the lubricating circuit and the fuel circuit.
CHECK THAT THE EXHAUST CIRCUIT IS NOT OBSTRUCTED OR DAMAGED IN ORDER TO AVOID
HARMFUL FUMES.
11. Check that the electrical connections are correct, the terminals are tight, check the fuses, the indicator lights and put the
switches to the on position. The electrical connections should be made to the relative terminal boards for the generating
sets with automatic operation control board and from the 5-pole outlet or from the terminal board for generating sets
with manual control board.
THE BOARDS ARE ONLY FOR CONTROLLING AND PROTECTING THE GENERATING SET AND ARE
FITTED WITH A THREE-POLE OR FOUR-POLE MAGNETOTHERMAL CUT-OUT FOR THE ACTUAL
GENERATING SET; EVERY SHUNT, MULTIPLE DISTRIBUTION OR DIFFERENTIAL PROTECTION SHOULD
BE MADE ON EXTERNAL BOARDS (SITE OR FACTORY BOARDS) PERMANENTLY CONNECTED TO THE
ACTUAL GENERATING SET. SPARK ENERGY CANNOT BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR DAMAGE TO THINGS
OR INJURY TO PERSONS DUE TO INEFFICIENCY AND DISPUTES WITH CONTROL ORGANISATIONS OR
WATCHDOG BODIES IF THESE RECOMMENDATIONS AND PRESCRIPTIONS ARE NOT IMPLEMENTED.
11. For power connections, the leads must be suitably sized taking into account the following parameters: length, type of
insulation, type of laying, formation of the actual leads; purely as an indication, the following current densities are
advised for cables laid in pipes and with an ambient temperature of 30° C:
up to 6 sq.mm 4 A/ sq.mm
from 10 to 16 sq.mm 3 A/ sq.mm
from 25 to 70 sq.mm 2 A/ sq.mm
from 95 to 185 sq.mm 1.5 A/ sq.mm
The neutral wire, except for strongly unbalanced loads, may have a cross section equal to half that of the phase wire.
The sections of the auxiliary wires of generating sets with automatic-operation boards are as follows for lengths limited
to no more than 20 metres:
•
POSITIVE-NEGATIVE
from 4 to 6 sq.mm
•
start, stop, protection, thermostat signals
1.5 sq.mm
•
heaters
from
2.5
to
4
sq.mm
Before installing a generator, the type of plant that the user employs must be identified and the CEI 64-8 regulations for
electric installation must be scrupulously observed. For the purpose of protection against indirect contacts, a TT, TN or
IT system may be carried out without distinction:
TT SYSTEM : the neutral is connected directly to earth. The earths are connected to a local earthing system, electricall
y independent of that of the neutral.
TN SYSTEM :the neutral is connected directly to earth. The earths are connected to the neutral wire, directly (TN-C) or
through a protection wire (TN-S). The wire acts both as neutral wire (N) and as protection wire (PE). It is called PEN
wire.
