For stand-by generating sets which operate for relatively few hours a year, it is advisable to change the engine oil twice a
year and not at the time intervals given by the manufacturer. This is because the quality of the oil deteriorates if it remains
almost inactive for months; this deterioration is greater if the generating set is fitted with a pre-heating system of the actual
oil.
12.3 ALTERNATOR MAINTENANCE
For checking, controlling, maintenance, adjustment and repair operations, refer to the relative technical handbook of the
electric machine. It should be remembered, however, that for correct alternator operation, the cooling air inlet and outlet
apertures of the machine must never be obstructed; it is therefore advisable to clean inside the machine periodically using
only dry compressed air. To facilitate operations, remove the protective guard.
12.4 STARTING BATTERY AND BATTERY CHARGE
Check the charge every 15-20 days. A charged battery usually has a voltage of about 2.2V per element measured with
charge cut out and with a small load cut in:
Density 1,28 (32° Bè) = charged
Density 1.23 (27° Bè) = semi-charged
Density 1.11
÷
1.14 (15°+18°Bè) = discharged.
ELECTROLYTE DENSITY MUST BE MEASURED IF DISTILLED WATER HAS BEEN ADDED, WHEN MIXING IS
COMPLETE: TO HELP MIXING, CHARGE THE BATTERY FOR 30 MINUTES
With an automatic-operation board, it should have an automatic static battery charger inside scaled to restore optimal
battery charging conditions after each operation. This device is stabilised for voltage (2.3V/elem) and limited for current
thereby ensuring that it is functional and reliable for a long time. It is advisable, however, to check the fuses periodically in
order to avoid the battery being discharged due to the battery charger being disabled.
12.5 DAILY MAINTENANCE or at every start
1. inspect all generating set parts for damage.
2. carry out all checks listed in chapter 8.00.
3. the procedures for checking the engine and the alternator are to be found in the relative handbooks enclosed with this
manual.
12.6 WEEKLY MAINTENANCE
1. carry out the operations described under daily maintenance
2. check that the fuses are intact and that the terminals are tight and protected with Vaseline
3. check that the air intake circuit is clean
4. for generator sets with a manually-operated control board, turn the key to the position START while simultaneously
pressing the push button START. For generator sets with an automatic control board, put the generator operation
selector switch to the TEST position to start the generating set without disturbing the delivery of power in progress.
IF THERE IS A MAINS POWER FAILURE DURING TESTS, THE MAINS CONTACTOR
AUTOMATICALLY OPENS AND THE GENERATOR CONTACTOR CLOSES.
In the AUTOMATIC position, the engine stops and the generator is set to start automatically in the event of a mains power
failure. Let the generating set operate for at least 5 minutes.
DO NOT LET THE DIESEL ENGINE RUN FOR LONG PERIODS WITH LIGHT LOADS.
