9.0 COMMISSIONING THE GENERATING SETS
The following checks must be carried out before commissioning, looking at the rules contained in the engine and alternator
instruction handbooks.
IF THE GENERATING SET IS SUPPLIED WITH AN AUTOMATIC CONTROL BOARD AND MAY BE
STARTED WITHOUT WARNING, MAKE SURE THAT THE ELECTRIC CONTROL BOARD IS OFF (NOT
OPERATING) BEFORE CARRYING OUT ANY CHECK
1. Make sure that the generator operating switch, the keylock switch, is in the “OFF” or “O” position.
2. Check the level of the lubricating oil, the fuel and the cooling water.
Geko
generating sets come with the engine already filled with lubricating oil of the SAE 15W-40 type. It is sufficient
to check before starting and after a brief period of operation that the oil level is up to the top notch on the dipstick. Use
the same type of oil both for the air cleaner bowl, if it is the oil bath type and needs topping up to the mark, and for the
injection pump casing.
Fill the fuel tank with diesel fuel for the traction diesel engine (low heat value 10,000 kcal/kg) and then deaerate the
fuel oil filters and the fuel pipes (see diesel engine instruction handbook). It should be checked that if only a little fuel is
put in the tank, the visual alarm for low fuel should appear on the relative electric control boards.
DURING REFUELLING PAY THE UTMOST ATTENTION THAT POLLUTING AGENTS, WHETHER
SOLID OR LIQUID, DO NOT ENTER THE TANK. IT IS STRICTLY FORBIDDEN TO SMOKE OR LIGHT FIRES IN
THE VICINITY DURING THIS OPERATION.
When filling with cooling water for the first time, the deaeration points on the engine should be opened until water runs
out of them. After a brief period of operation, check if the level of water in the radiator has gone down, as air bubbles
could have remained in the circuit during the first filling. Top up if the water level has dropped. If the generator has to
operate at an ambient temperature below 0°C, add seasonal anti-freeze to the water in the following percentages:
20% up to -8°C
30% up to -15°C
40% up to -20°C
50% up to -38°C
Alternatively replace the water with permanent liquid of the type PARAFLU 11
NEVER OPEN THE FILLER CAP OF THE COOLING CIRCUIT WHEN THE ENGINE IS HOT!! NEVER
ADD LARGE QUANTITIES OF LIQUID, SINCE IT COULD OVERFLOW FROM THE DRAIN PIPE OR FROM THE
RELIEF VALVE
3. Check the alternator and fan “V” belt for tension and wear. If necessary adjust or replace. (See engine handbook).
4. Check the state of the pipes used for connections and if deteriorated, replace immediately.
5. Check the battery terminals for oxidation; if necessary clean and grease the same with Vaseline or similar product.
DURING MAINTENANCE, DO NOT SMOKE OR TAKE NAKED FLAMES NEAR THE BATTERIES IN
ORDER TO AVOID EXPLOSIONS.
6. Check the electrolyte level in the accumulators and if necessary top up with distilled water (see engine handbook).
The level must not be more than 10 mm above the top edge of the plates, nor should it leave them uncovered.
THE BATTERIES CONTAIN HIGHLY CORROSIVE SULPHURIC ACID; WHEN TOPPING UP WEAR
PROTECTIVE GLOVES AND GOGGLES. THE OPERATION SHOULD BE CARRIED OUT BY QUALIFIED
