Procedure Turn Approach
Approach operations on the 400W-series will typi-
cally begin with the same basic steps:
Select Destination
“Select” and “Load” the
approach
“Activate” the approach
DO NOT USE FOR
NAVIGATION
1. Select the destnaton arport usng the
direct-
to
key, or as the last waypont n the actve
flght plan.
2. Choose the “Select Approach?” opton from
the procedures page or from the actve flght
plan optons.
3. “Load” the approach (often whle en route) n
antcpaton of ts future use. Ths places the
approach n the actve flght plan, but retans
course gudance n the en route secton untl
the approach s “actvated”.
4. “Actvate” the full approach or vectors-to-final,
as approprate. In some scenaros, you may find
t more convenent to mmedately actvate the
approach and skp the “Load” process outlned
above n step #3. The 400W-seres provdes
both optons.
Approaches with Procedure Turns
The procedure turn portion of an approach is
stored as one of the legs of the approach. For this
reason, the 400W-series requires no special operations
from the pilot — other than flying the procedure turn
itself — beyond what is required for any other type of
approach.
This example uses the VOR Runway 04 GPS
approach for Lynchburg (Virginia) Regional Airport,
KLYH, and assumes a departure from Frederick (Mary-
land) Municipal Airport, KFDK. The steps required to
set up and fly the approach are detailed below:
1. Pror to departng KFDK, the destnaton (KLYH)
s selected usng the
direct-to
key or by cre-
atng a flght plan termnatng at Lynchburg
Regonal.
2. Whle en route to KLYH, some 40-50 nautcal
mles away, you select the ATIS frequency to
montor arport condtons and runway usage.
Ths s accomplshed by selectng the NAVCOM
page and selectng the ATIS frequency from
the lst. Ths places the frequency on standby.
Use the
COM flip-flop
key to make the ATIS
frequency actve.
3. From ATIS you learn that runway 04 s n use
and plan your approach accordngly. Press
the
PROC
key and select the “VOR 04-GPS”
approach. From the transtons wndow, select
