5/ MAINTENANCE & REPAIR
This chapter provides supplemental information on replacing,
cleaning, and storing the fresh water membranes.
MEMBRANE REPLACEMENT
As your watermaker ages, your membrane will start to deteriorate and produce
lower grade water. When this happens, you may try to chemically clean the
membrane(s) to recover the performance. If this fails, you will need to replace the
membrane. Refer to
or
and proceed as follows:
1. Shut the the fresh and salt water sources, and disconnect the high-pressure (and
low-pressure, if needed) hose connections from the end of the vessel in question.
2. Remove the hoses and fittings from one end of the pressure vessel.
3. Remove the two retaining clip screws on the end of
the vessel, and remove the retaining clip.
4. Remove the end plug. The membrane will now be visible inside the pressure vessel.
5. Using a pair of needle-nose pliers, grab the exposed white tube. With a firm
grip, pull the membrane out of the vessel. If you are taking the membrane(s)
out to be returned to FCI for evaluation, do not damage or mar the white
tube—doing so will make it impossible for us to evaluate the membrane.
6. Take the new membrane out of the bag. Take care NOT to get the membrane dirty.
7. If the old membrane is being returned to FCI, rinse well with fresh water
and place into the bag. Seal the end with tape and return immediately.
8. With the new membrane in hand, slide into the vessel in
the same position as the original came out.
9. Inspect the o-rings, replace if needed, lubricate the o-rings and slide into the vessel.
10. Replace the fittings and hoses.
