Checking the spark plug
To ensure correct engine operation, the gap between the spark plug electrodes must be set
properly, and the spark gap must be free from carbon deposits.
The muffler will be hot after the engine has just stopped. Do not touch the muffler.
Never use spark plugs with incorrect heat rating.
1. Loosen all bolts and remove the top engine cover.
2. Remove the spark plug boot cap and remove the spark plug with a spark plug spanner.
3. Check the spark plug. If the spark plug is worn or the insulator is cracked or damaged,
discard the spark plug. Clean the spark plug with a wire brush if it can be reused.
4. Measure the gap between the electrodes using a feeler gauge.
If adjustment is necessary, carefully bend the side electrode.
Required gap: 0.60 – 0.70 mm.
5. Check if the spark gap washer is in good condition and tighten by hand to prevent
damage to the thread.
6. Tighten with a spark plug spanner to ensure proper sealing.
For new spark plugs, after tightening by hand, tighten with a spanner by 1/2 turn. For
previously used spark plugs, tighten with a spanner by 1/8 to 1/4 turn.
Loose spark plug may overheat and could result in engine damage.
7. Replace the spark plug boot cap.
