1.1.3 Inside the System Unit
Occasionally you may need to get inside of your system unit–to add optional
modules, for example, or to upgrade your system. The components in the
system unit are delicate and can be damaged by the static electricity conducted
by your body. Digital provides an antistatic wrist strap to ensure that this
static discharge does not cause damage. Wear the antistatic wrist strap
whenever you touch anything inside the system unit or any item stored in an
antistatic bag. To use the wrist strap, follow the directions on the envelope it
comes in.

1.1.3.1 To Open the System Unit
1. If the workstation software is running, shut it down: Type
shutdown -h
now
and press Return.
Note: You must be in superuser mode to shut down
the system. This requires that you obtain superuser privileges from your
system manager. Enter superuser mode by typing
su
, pressing Return, and
entering your password.
2. Turn off the system unit by pressing the 0 on the on/off switch on the back
of the unit.
