Entering
computer name-IP address
pairs into the
HOSTS
or
LMHOSTS
files manually
may be tedious.
IP address
Pros:
9
Uniquely identifies the computer no matter how far away it is.
9
Does not require any static or dynamic name-to-address mapping.
Cons:
9
Addresses in dotted decimal notation are not intuitive and may be hard to memorize.
9
The IP address will be changed if the computer was moved to another network segment.
9
If the
DHCP lease
for the given IP address has expired, the computer may be assigned a
different (usually
unpredictable
) address unless the
reservation
for this PC is used.
For
small-scale
Spider surveillance networks, where stations' addresses are mostly fixed the explicit IP
addresses or static mapping through
HOSTS
or
LMHOSTS
files can be used. For
medium-scale
networks,
it is recommended to use one or more
DHCP
and
WINS
servers. For
large-scale
networks, consider using
centralized
DNS
database on permanent basis. Consider corresponding literature available from a variety
of sources (including Microsoft) for more information how to achieve this.
