5.4 Surge
Waveform
Requirements
The surge waveform requirements are defined in terms of both open circuit
voltage and short circuit current waveform requirements. For both voltage and
current waveforms, the following parameters are defined:
OPEN CIRCUIT
VOLTAGE WAVE FORM
SHORT CIRCUIT
CURRENT WAVEFORM
Peak Voltage (V
pk
) Peak
Current
(I
pk
)
*
Rise Time (T
r
)
*
Rise Time (T

)
Decay Time (T

)
Decay Time (T
d
)
*NOTE:
In the ANSI/TIA-968-B standard, the terms Front Time (T
f
) and Rise Time (T
r
)
are used interchangeably.
Given in Table I (below) are the limit ranges for the individual waveform
parameters for each surge type.

These waveform requirements are discussed in more detail in the following
respective sections. Measurement guidelines, as well as guidelines and examples
of the associated calculations are also provided.
