Flash Photography with Speedlite 550EX
Metered Manual Flash Photography
With manual flash exposures, you can set the correct flash exposure by referring to the flash
exposure level indicator in the viewfinder. This is useful for close-up flash photography.
You will need a standard 18% gray card and an E-TTL autoflash Speedlite (such as the MR-
14EX) capable of manual flash exposures.
Set the camera and Speedlite settings.

Set the shooting mode to <
> or <
> and select
the center AF point.
•
Set the Speedlite for manual flash exposures.

Focus the subject.
•
Focus manually.

Position the gray card.
•
Place the gray card at the same distance as the
subject.
•
The gray card should be at a distance where the
entire spot metering circle can cover the gray card.

Aim the camera so that the entire spot
metering circle covers the gray card,
then press the <
> button (which
remains in effect for 16 sec.).

The Speedlite will fire a preflash and the required
flash output is retained in memory.

In the viewfinder, the exposure level indicator will
indicate the currently-set flash exposure level
relative to the standard exposure index.
