Media Filters
A media filter is required when connecting a UTP lobe segment from a
MicroMMAC-22T or MicroMMAC-24T to a station supporting STP
cabling. Cabletron Systems, Inc. offers the following media filters:
•
The TRMF media filter has an embedded female RJ45 (UTP) port and
a male DB9 (STP) connector terminating the 10-inch STP cable
attached to the filter.
•
The TRMF-2 media filter has a female RJ45 (UTP) port and a male
DB9 (STP) port.
C.1.2 STP
The MicroMMAC-42T /44T lobe ports and the TPIM T1/T4 support IBM
cable types 1, 2, 6, and 9, which are described as follows:
•
IBM Type 1 consists of two STP lengths of 22 AWG solid wire for
data. It is typically used for the longest cable runs within building
walls of buildings.
•
IBM Type 2 is similar to Type 1 data cable, but it has four additional
UTP lengths of 22 AWG solid wire carried outside of the shield casing.
It is typically used for voice communication and often used to wire
cable runs within the walls of buildings.
•
IBM Type 6 consists of two STP lengths of 26 AWG stranded wire for
data. It is typically used in patch panels or to connect devices to/from
wall jacks.
•
IBM Type 9 is similar to Type 1, but it is composed of 26 AWG solid
wire instead of stranded wire.
