5.5.2
Assembly and Attachment
Introduction
The following sections describe how to assemble the
Skull Reference Base
and attach it to the
skull and additionally, how to attach the sterile and unsterile reference arrays.
Before You Begin
Warning
The surgeon is responsible for the fixation and placement of the base and must ensure that
the device is mounted rigidly on the patient’s head.
Warning
The surgeon must be aware that essential structures could be injured during placement.
Warning
Only use the screws and screwdriver approved by Brainlab. Using other screws can result
in severe patient injury and inaccurate navigation.
For patients with a high bone density, predrilling could facilitate screwing and avoid screw
breakage. If you decide that predrilling is necessary, it should be performed according to
the screw manufacturers guidelines. The diameter of the drill bit used for predrilling should
not exceed 1.1 mm, with a 5 mm stop to avoid piercing the skullcap.
The base should be placed in such a way to avoid covering important structures needed
for surface registration.
