INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE USE OF THE EARTH AUGERS
5.0 USING THE MACHINE
5.1 Correct use
This earth auger is used exclusively to drill holes in the ground with a maximum 200 mm diameter for the NEA models
and 400 mm for model T-170HO (depending on the diameter of the auger to be used). After selecting the site for the hole,
clear the area of all shrubs and other materials that might get caught up in the auger as it drills and rotates.
Grasp the handlebar firmly and take a balanced, solid stance on both feet. At this point, you are ready to begin working.
Start the machine as described above and let the engine run on idle for 2-3 minutes. Race the engine a few times (while
keeping the tip of the auger raised above ground) without reaching maximum in order to make sure that everything is
running smoothly.
5.2 Using the machine
After positioning the tip of the auger on the spot where the hole must be dug, use the throttle lever on the handle to
gradually accelerate. The earth auger will begin to rotate and perforate the soil. When the auger’s spiral has filled with
soil, remove it from the hole and empty it at the side.
In this way, the hole will soon get bigger and deeper. When the spiral of earth auger model T-170HO is filled with soil,
or whenever the earth auger must be removed from the hole being dug, use the reverser and shift into reverse gear as
described in chapter 4.7.
Pay constant attention when using the machine and keep it under control at all times without distraction. This is the only
way to avoid risk of injury or damage caused by the terrain being drilled. The earth auger can stop suddenly if it hits a big
root or stone and could make you lose control of the machine momentarily, lose your balance and cause injury.
5.3 What to do when the auger stops during use
In case the earth auger gets blocked during use due to stones, roots, and the like present in the ground while working,
proceed as follows:
•
release immediately the safety trigger and the
accelerator lever of the gas handle,
•
Stop the engine with the STOP button,
•
Align the eyelet on the hub of the engine reduction
gear box with the hole on the tang of the auger (Fig.
22)
•
then insert a plug with a diameter of about 8 mm in
order to block the rotation of the auger in respect to
the machine handle (Fig. 23),
•
free the auger by rotating the machine through the
handle in the reverse direction to the rotation,
•
if possible eliminate the cause of the block,
•
check to see if you find visible damages to the auger
and/or the machine, if needed contact an authorized service center.
6.0 MAINTENANCE
6.1 Routine maintenance
Important! For model T-170HO:
Routine checks on the earth auger are essential to guarantee long working life and the maximum
performance and efficiency; in particular, bear the following in mind for the reduction unit:
•
(For model T-170HO): every 100 working hours completely replace the oil in the reduction unit.
•
For the auger, check the conditions of the tip and the blade and change them whenever signs of wear appear.
Follow the instructions and suggestions provided in the HONDA operation and maintenance manual for routine
maintenance, storage in periods of inactivity, and any malfunctions that occur in the engine in order to keep the GCV 170
engine always in perfect working condition.
