CHAPTER 6: Installation and Adjustment
As you attach devices to the Extender, here are some things you’ll want to keep
in mind:
•
Use caution if you are attaching KVM switches:
Different ServSwitch family KVM
switches use different proprietary signaling between cascaded switch units. The
only ServSwitch family switch models whose cascade signals the Rackmount
Extenders can carry are the models with a regular ServSwitch style DB25
composite interface (see the list in
Section 4.2.4.B
), so these are the only
models for which you can install a Rackmount Extender between two cascaded
(master and submaster) switch units.
Under no circumstances
should you ever try to use a Rackmount Extender to
connect two incompatible ServSwitches. Having an Extender between them
will not make them compatible.
• Each powered device should be powered OFF when you attach it.
• Make sure you don’t attach your keyboard and mouse, or the keyboard and
mouse strands of any multi-stranded cable, backwards. (Fortunately, the
strands of most multi-stranded cables used with the Extender are fairly easy to
identify: The keyboard strand is usually orange or purple and labeled with a
“K” or a picture of a keyboard, while the mouse strand is usually green and
labeled with an “M” or a picture of a mouse.)
• The 3.5-mm stereo “audio in” and “audio out” connectors on the various Hubs
and Remotes will be labeled differently, but “audio in” will always be associated
with the word “In” and “audio out” will always be associated with the word
“Out.”
• If you run audio cables to and from a KVM/Serial/Audio model, make sure to
run from the “audio out” connector on the device to the “audio in” connector
on the Extender Local Hub or Remote, and from “audio in” or “microphone”
on the device to “audio out” on the Extender Local Hub or Remote.
• If your Local Hub is a Dual-Access model, connect CPUs or the user ports of
KVM switches to the Local Hub’s CPU ports (on the
bottom
row) only, and
connect user equipment or the CPU ports of KVM switches to the Local Hub’s
local user-station ports (on the
top
row) only.
