CHAPTER 3: Options: Customizing the Modem Setup
Normally, as part of the V.32
handshake, the calling modem
begins sending a sequence to the
answer modem while the answer
modem is still sending answer
tone—in this case, there is no T1
timer. However, the V.32
Recommendation allows for a T1
time of up to 3 seconds, meaning
that the answer modem may be set
to wait (before falling back) for up
to 3 seconds.
Auto-Retrain
Hayes, V.25 bis, Dumb, Leased-line
modes (except V.33)
If the modem makes a
connection at one of the V.32 rates
(4800 bps to 14.4 Kbps) or V.22 bis
rate (2400 bps), it can request that
the remote modem send a retrain
sequence.
ENABLE. The modem will
request a retrain sequence.
DISABLE. The modem will not
request a retrain sequence.
Answer/Originate Default
Leased line modes (and manual
originate/answer dial operation)
This option sets the modem to
default to either answer or
originate status when it makes a
connection at one of the V.32 rates
(4800 to 14.4 Kbps). It also applies
to the V.22 bis rate (2400 bps), for
dial operation only.
ANSWER. The modem is set to
answer mode.
ORIGINATE. The modem is set
to originate mode.
Answer Tone
Hayes, V.25 bis, Dumb modes
The answer tone frequency is
selectable only if the maximum
data rate has been set to 1200 bps
(via the SPEED LIMIT menu), in
which case the answer tone can be
set to either 2225 or 2100 Hz.
Otherwise, the answer tone
frequency will be 2100 Hz (the
standard for V.32 operation). In
general, this setting should not
be changed (even for fallback with
Bell standard modems, which use a
2225 Hz answer tone).
Front-Panel Control
All modes
For security purposes, this option
may be used to make it difficult for
unauthorized users to modify the
modem’s configuration. If Front-
Panel Control is disabled, the
modem will not respond to Quick
Setup selections or to changes
made through option screens
accessed via the SETUP menus.
In addition, Hayes configuration
commands (and the &W and &Z
Hayes commands) will have no
effect, and stored user profiles (for
Hayes mode) cannot be altered.
