Start-up Procedures For Multi-Fan Controllers
WARNING: The following start-up procedures apply to standard model controllers. Procedures may vary depending on
installation options and system automation. Installer should verify proper wiring, terminations, and proper voltage supply
before proceeding. High voltage gloves and arc flash protection are recommended.
1. Verify proper AC supply voltage at terminals L1, L2, L3 of the controller disconnect for three phase controllers; verify voltage at
terminals L1, L2 of the controller disconnect for single phase controllers. Refer to “Allen-Bradley Controller Specifications and
Environmental Ratings” (p. 61) for acceptable voltage ranges.
2. If controller is tied into an existing fire alarm panel or building automation system, verify that user-supplied auxiliary contacts are
enabled to permit fan operation. Verify that the supplied door mounted speed potentiometer (1) is set to zero. If controller receives
speed commands from another source, verify that command signals are at the minimum level. Verify that supplied door-mounted “3
Position Switch” (2) is in the OFF position.
3. Energize the control panel. For start-up procedures, it is recommended that the installer perform this step and the following steps
with the controller door open. Turn the disconnect actuator (3) 90º clockwise to energize the control panel. The VFD’s display LEDs
should be lit at this point. If the LEDs are not lit, re-verify proper AC supply voltage at disconnect terminals and at the bottom of the
controller’s fuse block. If necessary, refer to “Troubleshooting Allen-Bradley Controllers” (p.68).
4. With speed reference or door mounted speed potentiometer (1) set to minimum or zero, turn the door mounted “3 Position Switch”
(2) all the way to the left or enable remote start/stop signal.
Fans should accelerate from 0 to 10 Hz as indicated on the display. Verify correct fan rotations at this time. Fans should rotate
counter-clockwise when viewed from the floor. If the fans are rotating incorrectly, move the door-mounted switch to the OFF
position. Wait for the fans to come to a complete stop. De-energize the controller and associated AC supply circuit.
Controller will
display “F004” momentarily, indicating an undervoltage fault. Wait 3 minutes for internal DC bus voltage to fall to a safe
level (darkened display LEDs are not an indication of safe voltage levels).
Refer to diagram on the following page to reverse
phase rotations
(switching two (2) leads on the AC supply side of the fan controller will not reverse fan rotations)
. Once the
necessary phase rotations have been reversed, repeat steps 1-4.
