positive pole
The standard scope of delivery contains the following components:
Delivery
1. Open the battery compartment by turning the screwcap to the left.
2. Insert a CR123 battery so that the positive terminal protrudes.
3. Close the battery compartment.
Insert / change the batteries
Notes:
■
Use only intact CR123 brand batteries
■
The battery compartment is sealed to the interior
of the device. This means that you can change
the batteries even in the rain. Water entering the
battery compartment cannot damage the internal
electronics. On occasion, however, it should be
dry cleaned with a cloth. Afterwards, it should
be left open for a few hours to allow the last
moisture to evaporate.
■
If you insert the battery once with the polarity
reversed, nothing can happen. The TILO is pro-
tected both mechanically and electrically.
■
The normal battery cap can also be replaced
by the battery extension (
). Then you
can use two CR123 batteries or a rechargeable
16650 battery for extended battery life.
When using a rechargeable 16650 battery, this
should be set in the menu (
the device may not function properly.

Thermal imaging features
Turn on / off
To switch on, open the protective flap by sliding it in the
direction of the arrow and thus unlocking it. The un-
locking is audible and noticeable by a clear cracking.
The flap then opens automatically and the thermal
sensor is released. Within four seconds, the device will
boot up and the thermal image will be displayed on
the screen.
This automatic switch-on function can also be deacti-
vated if required for devices with a menu. For example,
if accidental switching on in the pocket is to be reliably
prevented (
Alternatives in on / off
If the protective flap is damaged or even completely
torn off, e.g. in a particulary harsh use, there is a
further possibility to switch the TILO off and on by
pressing the buttons 1 and 2 simultaneously for at
least one second.
Running time in thermal imaging mode
The running time in the thermal imaging mode
depends on different factors:
– Quality of battery used
– Low ambient temperatures shorten the running time
– Simultaneous use of the lamp function shortens
the running time, in particular the IR lamp must
be observed. Its simultaneous operation may not
be noticed. The IR lamp operates in a wavelength
range that the thermal sensor cannot detect.
– Bright display illumination reduces running time.
In pure thermal imaging mode, the runtime of the
TILO-3™ under optimal conditions is approx. 3.5
hours.
To extend the battery life, please also refer to the notes
on page 38 and the external power supply on page 49.
Running time under extreme conditions (e. g. cold)
If the battery is already heavily drained or used at
very low temperatures (0° to – 20°C), the battery
may not be able to provide the comparatively high
currents required to operate the automatic shutters
(calibration). The device then switches automatically
to manual calibration mode and remains ready for
use. The following has now been changed:
1. If necessary, the shutter flag appears (small,
green unfilled square at the bottom left, or at
the top right).
2. If the shutter flag is not responded to with a
manual calibration the following can deterio-
rate the imag:
– Vignette formation (increasing deterioration
of contrast from the outside)
– possibly vertical stripes
– general contrast reduction
– increased noise
If the unit is started up in very cold conditions or when
the battery is almost empty the above-mentioned
restrictions occur at the beginning but can also be
eliminated by manual calibration. See next chapter.
Altogether, the runtime increases with the use of
manual calibration.
Thermal filter
The TILO has ten different thermal filters which
can be selected one after the other by pressing the
button 2 for a long time. The thermal filters have
different functions for different situations.
All tactical and black and white filters also exist as
„Boost-Version“. This is characterized by an increa-
sed contrast and a pronounced edge reinforcement.
However, this also increases the image noise. The
boost mode is especially helpful in bad thermal
conditions such as rain.
