50 MHz Processor Heat Dissipation
The 50 MHz 80486DX is a very high performance CPU that can
rival the performance of any currently available CPU, including
RISC processors. However, there is an undesirable side effect to
the high performance — the heat generated by high power
consumption.
The 50 MHz 80486DX can dissipate up to 5 watts of power. Since
this power is concentrated in a small area, it is necessary to remove
the heat generated by this power consumption. For this reason we
have supplied a heat sink with all AMI motherboards and CPU
Cards that have a 50 MHz 80486DX CPU. This incudes the:
•
AMI Series 16 Enterprise II EISA motherboard,
•
the AMI Series 50 Super Voyager motherboard, and
•
the AMI Series 37 EZ-Flex 80486 CPU Card.
Since AMI manufactures only the motherboard and CPU Card
system components, AMI has no control over operating factors
such as air flow and ambient temperature inside the computer case.
The system integrator must make sure that the 50 MHz 80486DX
CPU always operates within a safe operating temperature range.
