
3. The electrical contacts of the battery and cables must be clean and properly connected,
or the battery will not start the engine.
Disconnecting the battery
1.
Turn off the battery cut-off switch (if equipped) and main switch.
NOTICE: If they are
left on, the electrical system can be damaged.
2.
Disconnect the negative cable(s) from the negative(-) terminal.
NOTICE: Always
disconnect all negative(-) cables first to avoid a short circuit and damage to the
electrical system.
3. Disconnect the positive cable(s) and remove the battery from the boat.
4. Clean, maintain, and store the battery according to the manu
facture’s instructions.
Troubleshooting
A problem in the fuel, compression, or ignition systems can cause poor starting, loss of
power, or other problem. This section describes basic checks and possible remedies, and
covers all our outboard motors. Therefore some items may not apply to your model.
If your outboard motor require repair, bring it to your dealer.
If the engine trouble-alert indicator is flashing, consult your dealer.
Starter will not operate.
Q. Is battery capacity weak or low?
A. Check battery condition. Use battery of recommended capacity.
Q. Are battery connections loose or corroded?
A. Tighten battery cables and clean battery terminals.
Q. Is fuse for electric start relay or electric circuit blown?
A. Check for cause of electric overload and repair. Replace fuse with one of correct
amperage.
Q. Are starter components faulty?
A. Have service by a dealer.
Q. Is shift lever in gear?
A. Shift to neutral.
