Making the Switch from PageMaker to InDesign

InDesign CS is integrated into a wide variety of
print workflows and produces precise, predictable
printed results.
Finding a print service provider
If you’re looking for a print service provider who
accepts InDesign files in your area, you can locate
one using the Adobe Partner Finder on the Adobe
Web site. Adobe Solutions Network (ASN)
member print service providers can deliver high-
quality output of even the most challenging files.
Referring your print service provider to
the Adobe Solutions Network
If you’d like to refer your local print service
provider to the Adobe Solutions Network (ASN),
ask them to registration online on the Adobe Web
site.
The ASN Basic Program is a free Adobe service for
print service providers and includes many
resources. Adobe encourages all printer/prepress
companies to join the ASN Basic Program to
ensure that they keep up to date about new
resources, training, support, software upgrades
and updates, and other member benefits.
Exporting to PDF, XML, and
the Web
Both PageMaker and InDesign let you export PDF
files. In addition, InDesign can export documents
in XML, SVG, and JPEG formats, and as a
collection of files formatted for reuse on the Web.
You can add hyperlinks to documents in InDesign,
as well as other interactive elements, such as
movies, sound files, and buttons.

Creating Adobe PDF files
Both PageMaker and InDesign let you export
documents in PDF. In addition to PDF, InDesign
supports PDF/X (Portable Document Format
Exchange), a new format that facilitates document
exchange with prepress service providers and
other graphic arts professionals.
InDesign includes defined PDF Presets with
settings optimized for different output formats,
including commercial printing and the Web. You
can create your own PDF presets to save a
collection of PDF export settings you use
frequently or want to share with others in your
workgroup. You can also export InDesign layers as
PDF 1.5 layers.
