10 StartBackup
Yes 0.435GB No 0.435GB
This is available in
Iddle Cnvrt
and
All at End
temporali-
ties only. The initial volume,
e.g. 0.435GB, is shown then decremented during
the copy. Once the backup is launched, position
the main selector on STOP: the display backlights
switching off at the end of the copy, you will be
warned from a distance.
A practical note:
scroll through Media Labels,
choose the one you wish to start with, press OK
and go to StartBckp, press OK, switch to YES and
press OK. Once done, go back to Media Labels,
choose the next one and so on until everything
has been backed up. You can interrupt the process
between two disks and return to it later. Don’t
forget to write the media label, the date and proj-
ect name onto the burned CD/DVD as it comes
out, so as not to waste time looking for the ones
you haven’t done yet!
DVD±R
Aaton tested internal DVD burners should only be
used: the slot loading Panasonic UJ-825B
(4x DVD-R,
2.4x DVD+R, 2x DVD-Ram, 16x CD-R),
and the tray loading
LiteOn SOSW-852S
(4x DVD±R)
. First verify that
your blank disks are compatible with the burner.
We currently recommend
TDK
, Maxwell and
Verbatim, never use supermarket branded medias.
Ask the post-prod supervisor his ±R prefered fla-
vor; old Avid Mac can only handle DVD-R.
The burner ‘disk-ready’ icon shows on the right-
most circular display if a media is inserted and
recognized only. This can take as long as twenty
seconds.
While we never heard of a problem with CD-Rs,
most DVD burning failures come from bad han-
dling, we all know that a dirty DVD can be read,
but
a finger touched DVD can no longer be used
for recording.
Open your thumb and index in a
U shape and hold the blank disk by its opposite
edges.
If there is some dust on a recorded DVD,
do not clean it with a cloth in rotary movement
(best way to destroy a complete track), but by suc-
cessive radial strokes.
DVD-Ram Real-Time Mirroring
Use a LaCie D2 Multidrive and Panasonic 4.7G
DVD-Ram Type II SingleSided medias, FAT32 for-
matted by Cantar itself.
After connecting the drive to the Cantar firewire
port, power up Cantar. After a few seconds, the
center modulometer displays the drive icon. In the
SESSION position, select Int&Ext HD.
The LaCie 1x recording-speed currently limits the
real time mirroring to 6 tracks at 24-bit/48kHz, e.g.
4 track plus mixdown going to both drives.
When you stop recording, the •REC indicator
remains on for a few seconds. This corresponds
to the activity light on the drive itself, since it is still
writing data after Cantar has stopped recording on
the internal Hdd.
* DVD-Ram formatting can also be done in a PC running Windows
2000 (or Mac OS-X) : place a blank disc in the drive, right-click on the
drive icon (F:) and select«Format». The Windows format utility asks you
to select either UDF 1.5, UDF 2.0, or FAT32. Select FAT32, give the disc
a volume label, and click OK. Formatting takes about ten seconds (physi-
cal format not selected).
Lacie 1.6TB Disk
With PartitionMagic, make one FAT32 ‘primary’
partition (127GB) and format the rest under
NTFS. Cantar has direct access to the FAT32 par-
tition on which it can push the backups. A PC will
later transfer the files from the FAT32 to the NTFS
partition of the disk.
If the complete disk is NTFS formatted, a laptop
must pull the files out of the FAT32 Cantar Hdd
and copy them to the 1.6TB disk.
Pull Backup
3 o’ clock
The advantage of the non proprietary formatting
of the Cantar Hdd (FAT32) is that any Firewire
equipped computer can ensure the backup of
the Hdd and manage its files by selective erasure,
grouping, renaming, software loading, etc.
Cantar Hdd inside
The Internal Hdd, software unmounted, is not
seen by the Cantar processor but still powered
(‘Unmount’ TECH-1). Connect a Mac/Pc which
sees the Cantar Hdd as an ordinary external disk.
Cantar Hdd outside
It is fast and easy to open the Hdd compartment
– two knobs –, disconnect the disk then directly
connect the Mac Firewire cable to it (LaCie Hdds
handle the 33V Firewire supply of Mac desktops).
Warning:
the Cantar Internal Burner is toasted by the
30Volt out of a (G3/G4/G5) Mac desktop Firewire socket.
To connect a Cantar internal Hdd to a Mac, either use
a Mac laptop powerbook which delivers a safe 16V, or
extract the Hdd and directly connect it to the Mac desktop
(Lacie Hdds handle 30V).
No problem with PC Laptops or Desktops since they
deliver a safe 12V FireWire.
