Distributing and Installing the EFW NIC Firmware
31
■
Network distribution
Distributing firmware via the network is more convenient, but it may be less secure.
With EFW network installation, it is not necessary to physically access the computer to
install EFW.
For more information on network distribution, see “Determine How You Want to
Distribute EFW Firmware” on page 16.
Installing and Registering EFW Devices Using the Diskette-keyed Process
To distribute and install the EFW firmware and EFW agent via the diskette-keyed process,
you need to create a keying diskette from the Management Console, install the EFW NIC
from the
3Com Embedded Firewall Installation CD
, and apply the keying diskette to the
computer that will host the embedded firewall.
Creating a DOS-bootable Diskette
Before you can create NIC keying diskettes, you must format a diskette as a DOS-bootable
diskette. If you already have a DOS-bootable diskette, skip this procedure and go to
“Creating a Keying Diskette” on page 32.
If you have the capability to boot into DOS:
1
Insert a boot diskette and boot into DOS. An
a:
prompt appears.
2
Type
format a: /s
and press Enter one time. This action loads FORMAT and
system boot files into memory.
3
Read the data from memory as follows:
a
Remove the diskette with which you booted and insert the diskette you want
to format.
b
Press Enter. The diskette is formatted. FORMAT provides a summary of the diskette
that was formatted. You can now use this diskette to create a keying diskette
installation package.
If you have a Windows 95 or 98 machine:
1
Boot under Windows, and insert the diskette you want to format.
2
Open Windows Explorer, right-click the diskette, and select
Format
.
3
Select the following format options:
■
Select
Full
.
■
Select
Copy System Files
.
4
Click
OK
. Windows formats the diskette. You can now use this diskette to create a
keying diskette installation package.
NOTE:
For a keying diskette, you may save information for up to five NICs on the
same diskette. A network installation can be used by any number of NICs as long
as they have access over the network.
NOTE:
You cannot use a “command prompt” window under Windows NT 4.0 or
Windows 2000.
