12.4.2
Overvoltage protection
A sensible excess voltage protection is divided into coarse, medium, and device protection. The
coarse protection is normally installed near the mains supply input, the medium protection in the
subsidiary distribution. Device protection is integrated into all our devices, thus also in the ECblue
fans. An excessive voltage between
„
N
“
and
„
PE
“
is reduced by a varistor, which is internally attached
between both connections.
As a distributor substation with corresponding excessive voltage protection (medium protection) is not
installed in all agricultural buildings, these overvoltages can arise between the N and PE connection
leads. Of course, fundamentally, lightning arresters are not only supposed to place limitations on the
mains lines, but also on the control lines. As long as an installation is found within only one building,
no special measures need to be taken. If control lines run between different buildings, an effective
excessive voltage protection is to be installed onsite on the
fi
rst device in the respective building.
Generally, all surge arrestors work in such a way that they conduct the induced energy via the
potential equalization to the foundation ground electrode. Due to the high currents that can occur
here, it is necessary to keep the conductor lengths as short as possible and thus the impedance to the
potential equalization rails as low as possible in order to ensure the effectiveness of the device.
