d. Release the timing chain tensioner rod by

pushing up the timing chain guide “5” from the
hole “6”.

TIP

Do not push up the timing chain.
Push up the timing chain guide “5” in the direc-
tion “c” shown.

5. Turn:

Crankshaft
(several turns clockwise)

6. Check:

“I” mark “a”
Make sure that the “I” mark is aligned with the
stationary pointer “b” on the generator cover.

Camshaft sprocket alignment marks “c” and
“d”
Make sure that the camshaft sprocket align-
ment marks are aligned with the cylinder
head mating surface.
Out of alignment 

 Correct.

Refer to the installation steps above.

7. Measure:

Valve clearance
Out of specification 

 Adjust.

Refer to “ADJUSTING THE VALVE CLEAR-
ANCE” on page 3-5.

8. Install:

Timing chain guide (upper side)

Gaskets 
(to the cylinder head cover)

TIP

Apply Yamaha bond No. 1215 “1” onto the mat-
ing surfaces of the cylinder head cover and gas-
kets.

9. Install:

Cylinder head cover gasket 

Cylinder head cover

TIP

Tighten the cylinder head cover bolts in stages
and in a crisscross pattern.
