Shifting
While the boat is tightly moored, and without
applying throttle, confirm that the engine
shifts smoothly into forward and reverse, and
back to neutral.

Stop switches
Perform the following procedure to check
that the main switch and engine shut-off
switch operate properly.
Check that the engine stops when the main
switch is turned to the “
” (off) position,
or press the Start/Stop button.
Check that the engine stops when the clip
is pulled from the engine shut-off switch.
Check that the engine cannot be started

Shifting
EWM00181
Before shifting, make sure there are no
swimmers or obstacles in the water near
you.
Warm up the engine before shifting into gear.
Until the engine is warm, the idle speed may
be higher than normal. The control lever of
the Digital electronic control can be operated
even at high engine speeds. However, gear
shifting will not work until the engine speed
has automatically decreased to a speed at
which actual gear shifting is possible. As a re-
sult, for quick gear shifting there could be a
time lag when the gear is shifted until the en-
gine speed has decreased sufficiently.
To shift out of neutral
(1) Pull the neutral interlock trigger up (if
equipped).
(2) Move the control lever firmly and crisply
forward (for forward gear) or backward
(for reverse gear) 22.5° (a detent can be
felt).
To shift from in gear (forward/reverse) to neu-
tral
(1) Close the throttle so that the engine
slows to idle speed.
(2) After the engine is at idle speed in gear,
move the control lever firmly and crisply
into the neutral position.
