5.6.6
GPS
The
SMP
is available with a built-in latest-generation GPS SiRFstarIII receiver, allowing
you to display and memorise the position of the device when taking measurements. The
incorporation of SiRFstarIII functions makes the receiver extremely sensitive and precise,
allowing exact positioning even in built-up areas with poor satellite visibility.
The GPS is enabled/disabled through the configuration menu as explained in section 5.3.
When it is enabled, the main screen displays the message ‘Searching for satellites’, along
with a number indicating the number of satellites found. When the position obtained by the
receiver is valid, the data for latitude, longitude and altitude are displayed on the screen.
The best position for the device for finding satellites is vertical, with the GPS antenna
pointing upwards.
Enabling the GPS increases power consumption by the device and reduces its autonomy. It
is important to keep it switched off when it is not in use to avoid unnecessary drain on the
battery.
