Field Device Connection Options
The following sections describe the general principles of how to make a
connection to field devices and what you need to consider before making
the connection.
The following issues affect the connection procedure:

The AviMet system can include two communication channels for
connecting to field devices: data line and an optional maintenance
line.

Sensors can be connected to the CDU directly or through a data
collector, such as an automatic weather station.

Sensors and other field devices can be in auto-send or polling mode.

In duplicated systems, you can connect to devices through the active
server or the hot standby server. Using the active server interrupts the
data flow further to AviMet system.
The following sections describe how you should take these things into
account when connecting to a sensor.
Data Line versus Maintenance Line
Some systems include two communication channels from the CDU to the
sensors, or from the CDU to the data collector: data line and maintenance
line. The data line is used for transmitting the weather data to the AviMet
system CDU. The maintenance line is intended for maintenance and
troubleshooting purposes. If your system includes a maintenance line, you
should use it whenever you need a troubleshooting connection to sensors.
This way you can perform your troubleshooting tasks without interrupting
the flow of data from the sensors to the AviMet system CDU.
CAUTION
When you connect to a field device through the data line, you interrupt
the flow of automatic weather data from sensors to the end-user
applications. Consider the operative situation carefully before connecting
to a sensor through the data line. If you have a duplicated system, connect
through the hot standby CDU for viewing the data.
