Adding Coolant
CAUTION: Explosive release of fluids from
pressurized cooling system can cause
serious burns.
Shut off engine. Only remove filler cap when
cool enough to touch with bare hands. Slowly
loosen cap to first stop to relieve pressure
before removing completely.
IMPORTANT: Never pour cold liquid into a hot
engine, as it may crack cylinder head or
block. DO NOT operate engine without
coolant for even a few minutes.
John Deere Cooling System Sealer may be added
to the radiator to stop leaks. DO NOT use any
other stop-leak additives in the cooling system.
Air must be expelled from cooling system when
system is refilled and before running the engine
is run at normal operating temperatures. Air
will escape from the coolant system through
an engine coolant vent line (if equipped) when
the engine is idled. Allow approximately 30
minutes to ensure all air has escaped the
system before returning the engine to normal
service. If there is no engine coolant vent
line installed on the engine (connected to the
coolant surge tank) loosen the temperature
sending unit fitting (rear of cylinder head) or
a plug in thermostat housing to allow air to
escape when filling the system. Retighten fitting
or plug when all the air has been expelled.
Coolant level should be maintained to the bottom of the
surge tank filler neck or radiator filler neck (A). If needed,
add coolant as follows.
1. Loosen temperature sending unit fitting at rear of
cylinder head to allow air to escape when filling system.
IMPORTANT: When adding coolant to the system,
use the appropriate coolant solution. (See
ENGINE COOLANT SPECIFICATIONS in
Fuels, Lubricants, and Coolant Section
for mixing of coolant ingredients before
adding to cooling system.)
Do not overfill cooling system. A pressurized
system needs space for heat expansion without
overflowing at top of radiator.

2. Add coolant until level is at bottom of surge tank filler
neck or radiator filler neck (A). If equipped with a
translucent surge tank, coolant level should be at cool
fill line indicator on surge tank.
3. Tighten plugs and fittings when air has been expelled
from system.
4. Run engine until it reaches operating temperature.
