SECTION 4
MAINTENANCE
Type 310A
Change inform ation, if any, affecting this section w ill be found at the rear o f the manual.
Introduction
This section o f the manual contains maintenance inform
ation for use in preventive maintenance, corrective mainte
nance or troubleshooting of the Type 310A.
Panel Removal
The side panels of the Type 310A are held in place by
slotted fasteners. To remove the panels, turn each fastener
counterclockwise several turns w ith a screwdriver. Then,
pull the panel out at the top and lift away from the instru
ment. For best overall operation and safety, leave the
panels on this instrument except during calibration or
maintenance.
WARNING
Dangerous potentials exist at several points in the
instrument. When this instrument is operated w ith
the covers removed, do not touch exposed connec
tions or components. Disconnect power before clean
ing the instrument or replacing parts.
Access to Internal Components
The components o f the Type 310A are mounted on two
separate chassis which are hinged at the rear. The chassis on
the right side o f the instrument may be swung out to gain
access to components mounted on the inner sides of the
chassis. To separate the chassis, loosen the slotted fastener,
located at the lower fro n t corner on the right side, several
turns and swing the chassis open. The instrument can be
operated w ith the chassis open fo r troubleshooting. How
ever, overall instrument performance may be somewhat
lower when operated in this manner.

General
Preventive maintenance consists o f cleaning, visual
inspection, lubrication, etc. Preventive maintenance per
formed on a regular basis may prevent instrument break
down and w ill improve the reliability o f this instrument.
The severity o f the environment to which the Type 310A is
subjected determines the frequency o f maintenance. A con
venient tim e to perform preventive maintenance is pre
ceding recalibration o f the instrument.
Cleaning
General.
The Type 310A should be cleaned as often as
operating conditions require. Accumulation o f d irt in the
instrument can cause overheating and component break
down. D irt on components acts as an insulating blanket and
prevents efficient heat dissipation. It also provides an elec
trical conduction path and may result in instrument failure.
CAUTION
Avoid the use of chemical cleaning agents which
m ight damage the plastics used in this instrument.
Avoid chemicals which contain benzene, toluene,
xylene, acetone or similar solvents.
Exterior.
Loose dust accumulation on the outside o f the
Type 310A can be removed w ith a soft cloth or small paint
brush. The paint brush is particularly useful fo r dislodging
d irt on and around the front-panel controls. D irt which
remains can be removed w ith a soft cloth dampened in a
mild detergent and water solution. Abrasive cleaners should
not be used.
CRT.
Clean the plastic light filte r, graticule and the
CRT face w ith a soft, lint-free cloth dampened w ith dena
tured alcohol.
Interior.
Dust in the interior o f the instrument should
be removed occasionally due to its electrical conductivity
under high-hum idity conditions. The best way to clean the
interior is to blow o ff the accumulated dust w ith dry, low-
pressure air. Remove any d irt which remains w ith a soft
paint brush or a cloth dampened w ith a mild detergent and
water solution. A cotton-tipped applicator is useful for
cleaning in narrow spaces or fo r cleaning ceramic terminal
strips.
The high-voltage circuit should receive special attention.
Excessive d irt in this area may cause high-voltage arcing and
result in improper instrument operation.
Lubrication
G en eral.
The reliability o f potentiometers, rotary
switches and other moving parts can be maintained if they
are kept properly lubricated. Use a cleaning-type lubricant
(e.g., Tektronix Part No. 006-0218-00) on switch contacts.
Lubricate switch detents w ith a heavier grease (e.g., Tek
tron ix Part No. 006-0219-00). Potentiometers which are
not permanently sealed should be lubricated w ith a lub ri
cant which does not affect electrical characteristics (e.g.,
Tektronix Part No. 006-0220-00). The pot lubricant can
also be used on shaft bushings. Do not over lubricate. A
lubrication k it containing the necessary lubricants and
instructions is available from T ektronix, Inc. Order Tek
tron ix Part No. 003-0342-00.
